HONEY AND MUMFORD LEARNING STYLE MODEL (1986)

This model is based on the notion that in order to complete any given learning task, individuals need to be able to identify with one of four different learning styles. The four types of learning are characterised by a preference for acitive, reflective, theoretical or practical learning.  Honey and Mumford have devised a learning style inventory that can help an individual determine which one of these four learning styles they predominately identify with.

  • Activist: this type of learning is more for the doers, those who like to immerse themselves in experiences, activist learners are open minded and enthusiastic about learning and they prefer to work in social situations.

  • Reflectors: A reflector will stand back and observe gathering and analysing as much information as possible before they reach a final conclusion. Although[RJ1]  a reflector learner may be slow to make a conclusion, their decisions are based on sound consideration.

  • Theorist: a theorist likes to add new knowledge into an existing framework, they typically have a well organised system of thought and adopt a logical approach to problem solving

  • Pragmatists: this type of learner strives at problem solving, seeking out ways to make use of new ideas. A pragmatist is confident and practical in their approach to learning.
